Vilages and legends: short break in Northern Italy

If you wish to spend a short break in Northern Italy in the sign of beauty, you can visit the villages and castles of Romagna. In ancient times, the region was disputed between the most powerful dynasties of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. To defend their territories, the Malatesta house had impressive fortresses built abundant at works of art and well-suited to control the valleys and welcome illustrious guests. Their walls still tell stories of love and war, in a fabric strictly interweaving unforgettable legends and Renaissance beauty.

Day 1

San Leo and San Marino

San Leo and San Marino

San Leo is situate on top of a rocky spur looking out to the void. The village is gathered around a very old parish church and a Renaissance fortress, which was disputed among the most powerful dynasties of the territory. Then the fortress also became a prison: you can visit the cell of Cagliostro, a mysterious alchemist accused of heresy. Little far away, the most ancient republic in the world awaits you: get lost in the streets of San Marino and let the city tell you about its tale of freedom.

Day 2

Montefiore Conca and San Giovanni in Marignano

Montefiore Conca and San Giovanni in Marignano

The fortress of Montefiore Conca is nicknamed as “stone sentinel”: its square walls have dominated over the hills for centuries. It was built by the Malatestas, who also sought to make an elegant residence out of it: you will find frescoes, decorations and terraces looking out to the landscape. The legends kept by the fortress are quite a lot, starting from the ill-fated love stories of Costanza Malatesta. Little far, the village of San Giovanni in Marignano hosts noble palaces and small ancient squares, to discover through a pleasant promenade.

Day 3

Brisighella and Torriana

Brisighella and Torriana

Brisighela is among the most beautiful villages of Italy, thanks to its ancient strets and the rock dominating over the town. But it is not only famous for this: the slopes of its hills are covered with olive trees, producing a special kind of olive oil. You can taste it at cooperative farm “Terra di Brisighella”, along with wine trees and land product. Another stop you shouldn’t miss is Torriana: its tower and fortress still tell the war stories of the Malatesta, surrounded by the silence of a dream landscape.

Day 4

Gradara and Urbino

Gradara and Urbino

Gradara has kept its medieval charm: you can even walk along the walls of its citadel, on the background of the sea and the hills. it is well worth travelling to Urbino, gather around the Ducal Palace of Federico from Montefeltro, the Palazzo Ducale. The building seems as resorting from a book of fantasy tale: the harmony of classical art meets with the original inventions of the Renaissance architects, giving rise to a unique place. The village also hosts the birth house of Raffaello, where the artist learnt to paint.
