Legends and landscapes: tips for a weekend across the villages

Are you looking for the best way to sightsee the Romagna villages? Just follow the uphill streets of this region: they will lead you from the coastline to villages and castles rich in history. The tuff caves of Santarcangelo, Azzurrina’s ghost in Montebello, the love story of Paolo and Francesca in Gradara: every place is home to a tale, on the background of unique views. Your guides will be the typical flavors of the region, passionately kept by the farmhouses and the village taverns. From the uphill wines to the fish specialties, you will be able to leave for a journey across the flavors in the first Summer days.

Day 1

Montebello

Montebello

The fortress of Montebello contains several stories and an ancient mystery: in 1375, the daughter of the feudal lord disappeared in the snow of the fortress and was never found. Since then, many swear they have heard the young Azzurrina prowling the castle …

Santarcangelo

Santarcangelo

In the streets of Santarcangelo you will come across small museums, colorful fountains and mysterious underground cavities. The village has a centuries-old history, which you can discover among its fortress, the legends of the tufaceous caves and the vineyards that surround the town.

Sapori di Romagna

Sapori di Romagna

Santarcangelo is the right place to immerse yourself in the flavors of Romagna cuisine: fresh pasta, piadina, fossa cheese … According to some, the hills of the town are the birthplace of Sangiovese, the most loved red wine in the region.

Day 2

Verucchio

Verucchio

The fortress of Verucchio is called “Rocca del Sasso” for its impervious position, from which the Malatesta controlled their territories. The castle is well preserved and still tells the story of the powerful Romagna dynasty, which originated here.

San Leo

San Leo

The village and the fortress of San Leo rise on a steep spur of rock, overlooking the void. From here saints, artists, leaders and heretics have passed: their stories are told by the Pieve and the Fort, long disputed between Malatesta and Montefeltro.

Il conte di Cagliostro

Il conte di Cagliostro

Cagliostro is a character shrouded in mystery: an alchemy expert, he frequented the circles of Freemasonry and European courts. He was accused of heresy, sentenced to prison and locked up in a tiny cell, in the heart of the fortress of San Leo.

Day 3

Gradara

Gradara

The village and fortress of Gradara are perfectly preserved. You can stroll through the ancient streets, or walk the walkways of the medieval walls: the colors of the sea and the hills come together on the horizon, creating a unique landscape.

Paolo e Francesca

Paolo and Francesca

“Amor, ch’a nullo amato amar perdona”: according to some, the story of Paolo and Francesca took place in the halls of the Gradara castle. Dante tells in Hell of their love and of the tragic fate they went through, making them immortal.

Pesaro

Pesaro

Pesaro, overlooking the sea, contains places rich in history. Rossini’s house is one of the stages not to be missed: scores and multimedia stations will take you on an exciting journey between the music of the maestro and the daily life of the nineteenth century.
